"Because," Sirius said, knowing his best friend better than he was giving him credit for, "I may be a blithering idiot, but that won't matter. She'll help us, and willingly. You may not think I'm that good with girls, but there's a reason they keep on coming, and not just because dog is man's best friend." Sirius sat back in his chair, and looked at James.
"She likes you," Sirius said. "And she'll want to help us, even though she'll never admit it. And either you help me with this map and cut me some slack or I'm not going to let you go on that date with Lily I secured for tomorrow." Sirius' dangerous grin made a reappearance. James' face was a mixture of both being confused and incredulous so that Sirius could barely contain his laughter.
Composing his face, Sirius leaned forward again. "Remember how she said she had a date?" Sirius asked, carrying James to the proof that he, Sirius, was indeed intelligent. "Well, I heard the other day that that Tom bloke had asked Lily out to Hogsmeade tomorrow. Now here comes the ingenious part. When, completely by coincidence, Lily's friend asked me out for tonight, I changed it to tomorrow and arranged a double, knowing Lily already had a date. Being me, I slipped Tommy boy a Puking Pastry this morning at breakfast, no cure, to last exactly two days! I also gave some Slytherin a galleon to pretend he cursed the poor bloke! Now, dateless, and also not dreading going out with you, she'll have no choice but to let you take her! And that is when you will convince her to help us."
Sirius' smile was deadly.

The look of confusing and incredulity of was due to the horrifying image of bestiality that had leaped to the fore of James' brain when Sirius uttered the phrase, "You may not think I'm that good with girls, but there's a reason they keep on coming, and not just because dog is man's best friend."
Sweet Merlin.
Shoving that image aside, James tried not to let his face show how impressed he really was with Sirius' reasoning. "You're a sneaky bastard, I'll give you that, and you'll be lucky if Lily doesn't find out what you did to her squeeze." Though it wasn't anything I wasn't planning on doing... maybe more forgiving. "And I never said I wouldn't help you with the map, you prat. Just pointing out that you can't do everything." He arched a brow at Sirius haughtily, then let the expression drop.
"That being said, what about Wormy? I haven't seen him around lately, and I'm starting to get the feeling he doesn't really fancy us anymore," he said, and leaned back in his chair. The small tagalong had indeed disappeared, though it bothered James more than he would've thought; he actually missed having the fourth member of their group around. Though he, Sirius and Remus were the main troublemakers, and trouble getting out-of-ers, Peter had proved himself just as sneaky as the rest of them, though he did lack a certain gusto that he and Sirius gave to the group and the intelligence that Remus brought with him.
Ah well, he still went along with everything they did and he was fun when he wanted to be.

"And," Sirius added, almost bouncing in his seat, "you know the Slytherin I said I paid a galleon just to pretend he did it? Well, I almost didn't even have to pay a galleon, he almost did it on his own! It was her best friend, Snape," Sirius said, looking absolutely delighted. "He didn't want that prat Tom going out with her any more than you did!" Sirius was laughing so hard he couldn't even open his eyes anymore.
"And," Sirius added, "I actually think Wormy does fancy someone at this table, and it's not you or me if you catch my drift..." Sirius rolled straight off his chair in laughter. "Aw, I'm just joking Moony!"

Remus really did have to give it to him, the bastard. Sirius may be a dope, but apparently he could be quite witty when it means helping out a friend. Who would have thought? Remus always thought he lacked the brain cells for that kind of thing. Unless pudding was involved. Or girls. Or causing mayhem. Or taunting Snape. Oh, hell.
"Well, I'm glad both of you have dates for tomorrow now. Gives me a chance to catch up on work without two nuisances breathing down my neck. If only Peter could go and play for a bit.." Yes, poor Peter will have no idea what to do since he couldn't tag along. Maybe Remus would send him off to spy on the other two. Anything to keep him out of his hair, really.
You know, Moony almost felt sorry for the people whom Sirius constantly taunted. Like Severus. But then Remus remembered that he had to put up with Sirius every god damned day.
As both his friends went on and on, Remus found himself zoning out to the world of books, only catching snippets here and there. What could he say though, he was surrounded by them.
Sirius' last comment brought him back to reality though, and he narrowed his eyes coolly. "I think its a common fact that Peter practically worships James feet, not mine" he shot at the other two. Man, sometimes the urge to smack Padfoot upside the head was unbearable.

"He speaks!" Sirius shouted, a little too loudly. The librarian came over and, true to her word, kicked him out of the library. "Well, I guess I'll go look for Wormy in the common room. Remus, can you come with me? I've really got to get to work on that essay and I've got no clue what I'm doing. I've procrastinated enough for today...or, well, a lifetime - but who's counting?" Sirius resumed at tugging on Remus' arm as he rushed up to the common room, calling back to James as he went, "Hey, James, can you grab all those books when you come up? Thanks!" and the library door slammed, the librarian seeing him off angrily.
All was silent on the way back up to the Gryffindor common room, they barely passed anyone, who, he guessed, were all outside enjoying the nice weather. "Mandrake Root," Sirius told the Fat Lady without stopping, and climbed through the portrait hole.
Wow, Sirius thought, I was wrong...
Everyone was not outside, they were all in the overstuffed common room. There were no chairs left anywhere, and barely any floor space either. People were sitting around chattering everywhere, to the point that Sirius wondered if there were even this many people in the Gryffindor house. "Um, I think we should try the dormitory?" Sirius said, as he scanned the room and found no sign of Peter.

The first stab of irritation James felt at Sirius nipped at his conscience, now that it had finally decided to wake up. "He's just a kid, Pads, leave him alone. Maybe you're the reason he keeps skipping off on us and coming 'round when you aren't." As much as he was uncomfortable with Peter's unwarranted worship of him, James did like the kid, some. He knew how to keep his mouth shut, could take a good joke and was up for anything they did; the only time he ever saw that begin to crack was when Sirius decided to use him for a whipping boy. Even Lily had stopped him a few times when the boy became Sirius' target.
He didn't try to stop the librarian from chucking the young man from the library and instead heaved a sigh, gathering his books into a pile and stuffing Sirius' into his own bag. He was starting to understand just how tired Remus could get of having to clean up after the two of them and almost decided to start cleaning up after himself... once he got this map business out of the way. He slipped it in front of him and looked down at it, scrunching up his hazel eyes seriously.
"It's got major potential," he said to himself, giving the map a harsh once-over. He scrawled in the passage they knew from the Willow and tapped the map with his wand, turning his chickenscratch into a mimicry of the flowing text and lines of the rest of it. "If Lily could charm it for us... yeah... nice." He stuffed the map into his potions book and rose to his feet, stretching.
Creatively acquisitioning information took a lot of work and after shoving the books into an unobtrusive pile on the corner for the librarian to take care of, he hoisted his bag to his shoulder and followed his two friends to the Tower. Maybe he'd catch a glimpse of Lily on the way there or better yet, have to walk her back. The castle could be dangerous with all those pesky Death Eaters around.

Lily Evans marched down the corridor, fury written across her face. Knowing where to find the one who had caused her to be so enraged, she headed towards the group of Slytherins, yanking on the robes of a boy with coal-black hair.
“Severus, explain yourself,” Lily growled.
“Lily? What are you talking about? Why are you so angry, let’s walk this way,” Snape was shocked to see his best friend yelling at him.
“You cursed Tom. Why?” she glared at him.
“That Black kid gave me a gallon to pretend to curse him. He said that block asked you out, so I did it for your own good,” he replied laughing, now knowing what she was ranting about.
“Why does it matter who asks me out and who doesn’t? Because of you, I will probably have to go on a date with Potter! Is that what you want?” she screamed, waving her wand in his face. She was too furious to notice that James was in the corridor walking right towards her. When he was a few yards away though, she recognized who it was and immediately stopped, looking embarrassed.
OH NO! Please tell me James hadn’t heard any of that… she thought to herslef

Sirius opened the door to the boys' dormitory and failed to see Wormtail. Now Sirius really was concerned. He hadn't seen him outside, he wasn't in the library -not surprising, and he wasn't in the Gryffindor tower.
Sirius went in and plopped on the edge of the nearest four-poster bed. "I wonder where Wormy could be..." Sirius wondered aloud. He looked over at Remus, whose hair was surprisingly windswept for being inside for at least an hour. "Did he tell you anything about where he was off to?" Sirius asked, puzzled and slightly excited by this mystery. "You know, if we had this map..."Sirius trailed off.
"So, have you decided to just relax yet or do you still insist on studying until your brains leak out of your ears?" Sirius stretched his arms over his head and fell back onto Remus' bed, staring up at the ceiling.

Remus thought for a second before answering, " No, come to think of it I haven't seen him since breakfast. I've been running all over the castle with you since." He was probably in the kitchens snacking of something, it was his and Sirius' favorite place when they were bored.
"I'm relaxed, Sirius. I happen to enjoy books you know. And, if you read one every once in a while you'd know that it's impossible for your brain to leak out of your ears. Its not a liquid, for god's sake" The Remus laughed, adding "Well, not most people's brains. Sometimes I think your's may have a leak."

"My brain or my head? Because I do believe my head has a few leaks," Sirius said, sticking a finger in his ear. Seeing Remus' look of revulsion, Sirius flung himself from the bed and at Remus, waggling his finger in his face. "See if it smells like brains!"
Sirius rolled back onto the bed laughing. Wow, I'm kind of an ass sometimes...
Sirius had a very strange urge to go give Remus a hug. He suppressed it, and considered having another "dog fight" instead. He suppressed that urge too, and flipped over on the bed so that he was laying on his stomach. Trying to discover where this feeling came from, he stared hard at Remus. He didn't stop staring as his thoughts took him away.

James hadn't stopped when he heard Lily's voice; after all, she did have a tendency to raise it whenever he and Sirius popped in. But he did stop when he saw her screaming at Severus Snape, her face inches from his, almost as red as her hair and her green eyes blazing. Only when she heard his footsteps and whirled did the anger drain from her face like liquid and turn into mortifying humiliation. Not that it didn't look good on her; every emotion that flitted across her face and through her eyes was always perfect.
He didn't let his own emotions crash against his face, schooling his features into a polite and somewhat sardonic mask as he strode toward the pair, adjusting his bag strap. So she really didn't like him and Snape was encouraging it; he expected nothing less from the slimy toad. It was common knowledge that although Lily and Snape had been friends for years, he had the hots for the young woman and would do anything in his power to keep her all for himself.
"You just need to give yourself over to my charms, Lily," he said, waggling his eyebrows at her. "After all, I'm not a dog like Sirius." He barely glanced at Snape; he wasn't even worth the time of day, small, lanky-haired and too buried in his chemistry set to even bother learning how to use his wand. Even the wizarding world had nerds.

“Maybe I should, James, but that might end with Snape jinxing you dead,” she spat through clenched teeth, and resuming her glaring at Snape. “Or is Potter here an acceptable guy for me to date?”
“NO! I would rather you go out with Tom than this slimy git,” Snape exclaimed, shock on his face.
“And who are you to decide? Maybe, I will go out with Potter, and we will be so happy together we decide to get married, and live happily ever after together for the rest of our lives! WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME WHAT I CAN AND CANNOT DO?” she raged at him, actually managing to have Snape’s eyes filled with fear, especially since Lily happened to be clutching her wand so hard that her knuckles were white.
“Well, if you would be so kind, James. Please tell Sirius I might not be able to make it on that date he planned. Severus here jinxed the guy I was going to come with. Can you ask if I could send someone else in my place on the date?” Lily turned to James, regaining her composition, and looking as charming as ever.
